In an effort two update this site more frequently, I am going to try just posting the photos for the week. However, this post has 44 photos from the last month. Have fun checking out what the kids have been up to.
The snow took our family by surprise. We mostly stayed warm inside, baked, and watched lots of movies. We did, however, get out for a little cold fun. Brandon and Alejandra earned the Super Student awards this week for excellent behavior and participation. We've been creating beautiful, original art in class. All of the kids created a picture for the Rose City Classic Dog Show Art Contest. We also worked on colorful snowflakes. Dani-Lyn received a special honor for displaying safe, kind, and responsible behavior on the bus. In a continuing effort to make our classroom into an ideal learning environment, I've installed these new light filters. They decrease the harshness of the floursent bulbs. I'm really enjoying the effect so far.
Raven's Home Visit At Work Halloween Fun Jog-A-Thon Champ Super StudentsPuppy! Urban Tour Field Trip The school year is certainly in full swing now. Our class has learned to behave like third graders magnificently. Now we're getting deep into academics and preparing for October conferences. Don't forget to contact me to schedule yours. Now for the photos! Working on iPads Aster Alumni Pay A Visit Our Lego Friends The First Super Students Let's Play Summer Reading Awards Jog-A-Thon I absolutely cannot believe that January is almost over! We've been very busy around the classroom. The kids have settled into the routines and are working hard. It shows in the quality and quantity of work being done. One big change I made over winter break is that we now have standing desks in our room. I am excited that the students are getting more movement throughout the day. It also seems to be helping with alertness and on task behavior. One major focus in our class right now is preparing for the science fair. Each table group has come up with a question on their own to test and record. They will then be creating displays to be featured at this year's science fair. One of the requirements was that they use items that they have at home or they can easily obtain. So, they might come home with some strange requests. Dog Show 2016 Hello parents of Mrs. Aster's 3rd grade class! The last couple of
months, I've had the joy and privilege of working with your children as a student teacher under Mrs. Aster's tutelage. I taught several math lessons on rounding, tables, and word problems and also assisted during other subjects, such as reading, social studies, and writing. Working with such a bright, hard-working and delightful group of children was inspiring. Thank you for sharing them! Sincerely, Laurie Davala I've just spent four fabulous days with my family. We ate too much, relaxed together, and reflected on the multitude of reasons to be thankful. I am certainly thankful for my wonderful class this year. They are so caring and considerate. They also apply themselves and impress me with their hard work. In class we continue to focus on complex tasks. The students have finished typing their most recent narrative essays. They then recorded themselves reading their essays to present to the class. In math we are moving on to pictographs and bar graphs. Students should be able to interpret data from these graphs as well as create their own. In discovery the students are creating original art that will be displayed as part of a competition for The Rose City Classic Dog Show. Along with all of our hard work, we've had time to celebrate and enjoy working together. We attended an exciting assembly where we watched a cup stacking competition and enjoyed a very silly chicken dance. The students also earned a tech party (their choice) by making responsible choices in the classroom. Fiona's birthday gave everyone a chance to belt out the GoNoodle birthday song and devour cookies. So much fun in so little time!
This week we studied different types of art. In reading, we read about the process illustrators use to create a book. We were also lucky enough to have three parent volunteers present our first Art Literacy lesson. The students loved creating their own tessellations. If you stop by the school any time soon, you can see the results hanging in our hall. In math, my student teacher, Mrs. Davala, started our next unit. Over the next few weeks she will teach our students about rounding, complex word problems, and bar graphs. I also shared with a the students a large bar graph that tracks and displays how much progress each student has made on MobyMax. Each child has three goals: to complete fact master, to make one years growth on the math section, and to complete all of the third grade math.
TO DO: *Review your child's password sheet in his/her class binder *Create a BrainPop account using our class code *Collect and send in toilet paper for the hygiene drive |
AuthorI am both a teacher and parent at Durham Elementary. This is 13th year at Durham, eight of which have been in third grade. Where has the time gone? When I'm not teaching, I'm either playing with my 5 "home kids" or reading a book. Categories |
