This week we worked hard and ended with some serious fun. In reading we studied non-fiction literature, specifically learning about bats. While in writing we continued our narrative work focusing on dialogue. In math we learned about different ways to identify angles and triangles. We ended the week with a wonderful Wonka Party on Friday where each child decorated and enjoyed their own doughnut as we watcher Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Time has been simply flying by. Can you believe that October is more than halfway over? This week will also go fast since there will be only three days of schools. The other two days are reserved for conferences. If you do not yet have a time scheduled, please contact me.
Time to get caught up on photos! This week we entered the wonderful world of geometry. The students were excited to work with rulers and explore shapes. Our objectives are to find the perimeters of polygons and identify quadrilaterals. We will continue learning about these shapes through next week and test for understanding on Thursday. Did you notice that there will be no school on Friday? I am sure looking forward to getting back to a regular five day schedule. However, it must be said that my students have really adjusted to third grade and seem to know our routine quite well despite the shortened weeks. The next days off will be October 22nd and 23rd during conferences. Have you signed up yet? Please email me with an approximate time that will work for you and I will let you know what is still available.
We had quite a week! I could go on and on, but I think these pictures will give more detail than I could. I suggest you look over each with your family and ask your student to tell you more about them. As you can see, we toured several amazing buildings in Portland. My students were enthralled with the many forms of art and the beauty of the city. The weather was just perfect for our trip on Tuesday. On the other hand, our Jog-A-Thon was quite wet on Friday. Regardless of the rain, all of our students participated with great attitudes.
We all survived our first complete week of school. While I still may be tired and have a sore throat, I think it was a complete success. The kids really settled into the groove of things and started shining. They are so excited to show what they know as well as dive into new subject matter. It's going to be a fabulous year!
There are two big events coming up this week. On Tuesday we will be taking our first field trip. Currently I have 16 of the required 31 permission slips. Please make sure your child turns in his/her permission slip on Monday if they haven't already. I am very thankful that we have enough volunteers as their presence makes the whole trip possible. The second exciting event this week is our annual Jog-A-Thon. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year and a whole lot of fun. Third grade will be running at 10:10 and our class will be wearing blue. What a fun week we have ahead of us! Welcome to my class page! My goal for the year is to try to update this site about once a week with important details and provide you a peek into our classroom. Monday will be the start of our regular schedule. Please make sure your child comes to school on time as we will be switching for our new reading groups at 8:25. We'll have five minutes for snack before continuing on to math. While we do not have math groups, seven of our classmates will be going to Mrs. Hamilton for math to help decrease class size during this crucial core subject. It's also the first day of our specials rotation. We will start with Music on Monday and have P.E. on Tuesday. Upcoming Important Dates
* 9/16 PSO Meeting at 7:00 pm * 9/17 Dibels Day BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT 6:00-7:40 * 9/22 Urban Tour Field Trip * 9/25 Jog-A-Thon Today we tried some new and exciting things in class. In the picture above, three girls are working on an old thing, Scholastic News. However, when they finished they followed up with connecting it to the world by using Google Earth. It was pretty fun to see the students exploring this interactive app.
The second new thing we did was create BrainPop accounts. Now all our students can access BrainPop's educational videos and quizzes at home or school. They will be using the same ID and password they use to access IXL. A big thanks to PSO for purchasing BrainPop for the entire school. Finally, we tried some new brain breaks in the classroom. GoNoodle.com Good-bye Mr. Potato! Our dear classroom friend has been stripped of all his parts. Today, on the first day of the fourth quarter, we will start to rebuild him in an attempt to earn another party before the year is complete.

AuthorI am both a teacher and parent at Durham Elementary. This is 13th year at Durham, eight of which have been in third grade. Where has the time gone? When I'm not teaching, I'm either playing with my 5 "home kids" or reading a book. Categories |
